6 septembre 2012 à 6h42 #155140Greetings, tbook and welcome to la.com
No need to apologize for the quality of your French. I, for one, appreciate your effort.
I speak to you as one of the group’s volunteer readers.
Our audio book recordings may be used according to the standard and generally accepted rules applying to a non-commercial use. May I direct your attention to the following site :
https://www.litteratureaudio.com/aide#5
which is our help section,
under the heading : « informations légales » ” legal information “.
As you can see, the audio book copyrights themselves belong to the volunteer readers who recorded the said audio books, la.com acting merely as a distributor of the material. However, an intelligent and non-commercial use is allowed and encouraged, even : « …d’une utilisation intelligente et non commerciale. »
Personally, I see no restriction as to merely listing the contents of the catalogue, which I understood to be your question and objective. Indeed, I am not aware of any other ” electronic ” application to consult our catalogue, other than the one existing within the scope of the web pages to be found on our site. Here, our catalogue may be searched using various search functions such as : author, title, genre, country, most popular readings, most consulted individual works description pages, etc.
Sounds to me like your program would add an interesting dimension to our site ! It would indeed be relevant to spread the good news to a broader audience, into the English-speaking world, for example.
In any event, on behalf of all, I thank you for your interest in our work. Do not hesitate to contact me if I can help you through any of these questions,
take care,
jf7 septembre 2012 à 5h57 #155142Thanks for the message! I appreciate your taking the time to respond, and your English is certainly vastly better than my French. I appreciate your pointing me to the page with the licensing information. From the little I can tell, it looks like the license wouldn't prohibit me from listing the books in an app.
I will look into things some more. I am not sure how difficult the technical side would be. I haven't found a way to access the whole catalog through an RSS feed or something similar, so I would probably need to find a way to extract the catalog data from the web site, which might be difficult. I think people would find it useful, though. About 30,000 people have installed the LibriVox app, and it seems to get quite a bit of use. Given the size of the Francophone world, I suspect there would be significant interest in accessing the Litterature Audio books via Android, as well.
Thanks again!
Theodore
7 septembre 2012 à 8h19 #155143Not at all, Theodore, it was my pleasure.
30,000 users certainly sounds like a non-negligeable number to me.
I, for one, would like my own readings in English on LA.com to become better known outside of our little French community. I am particularly proud of my rendition of ” The Awful German Language “, by Mark Twain, and am noticing that it could replace advantageously the not-too-hot version of it ( in my not so humble opinion ) to be found on LibriVox. Unfortunately, no one out there in the English-speaking world will ever know. This English portion of my work remains accessible to only a very small audience on LA.com, that part of it which can easily understand English. Of course, I am not the only one in this situation. A few of my colleagues have recorded works in their own languages such as Spanish and Italian and their contribution will also go largely unnoticed outside the scope of LA.com.
Clearly, I can only commend you for your efforts to propagate the knowledge of existing audio books, in all languages, everywhere.
good luck with your enterprise,
best regards,
jf7 septembre 2012 à 16h37 #155145oh ! …and one more thing, Theodore !
I do not very well understand the technical considerations you bring up in your message, such a thing not being my bag, but I understand you are looking for an RSS feed ?
« I haven’t found a way to access the whole catalog through an RSS feed or something similar,… »
I am not sure whether that means that you looked up our RSS feed and found it to be incompatible with your proposed application, or whether you simply overlooked it. In case of the latter, we DO have an RSS feed. You will find a link to subscribe to it in the rightmost column on the LA.com welcome page, about one screen down.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/litteratureaudio
At the very least, this will keep you posted as to all new publications, as they become available to the public at large.
Hope this helps,
take care,
jf11 septembre 2012 à 18h24 #155149Thanks for the info on the RSS feed! I have looked at it, and it looks like a good way to load new books, but so far as I can tell, it is limited to the most recent 10 books. I have tried to figure out if there is a way to get it to page through the whole catalog, but so far, that doesn't seem possible.
I am making a little bit of progress, but I do have one more question. I noticed that some, but not all of the books at Au Fil des Lectures also seem to be on this site. I was thinking of starting with those books, because it is easy to get an electronic catalog for them from Archive.org. For the rest of the books, I think I will have to come up with some way of going through the web site and collecting the information.
Thanks again!
Theodore
12 septembre 2012 à 18h08 #155153Not at all, Theodore.
I am glad that my indication was of some help, allbeit of a limited nature.
I just wish I possessed a technical knowledge in such matters that could be of more help to you.
What was the question, by the way ?
talk to you soon,
jf12 septembre 2012 à 21h20 #155154Thanks! Mainly I was interested in the relationship between Au Fil des Lectures and this project. I was wondering if there was any traps that I ought to watch out for in importing books from the Au Fil des Lectures list on Archive.org. The license question seems to be fine, but I thought I would check before I got too far along. Thanks again!
Theodore
12 septembre 2012 à 21h30 #155155I have just sent you a private message on the internal LA.com communications network.
If you wish, we could resume our conversation there.
